Tottenham Hotspur FC Training Centre Sand Banding – Phase Two
April 2026
Following the success of the original sand banding installation carried out in May 2024, Fineturf were reappointed by Tottenham Hotspur to return to pitch seven at Hotspur Way Training Centre and complete a second phase of works.
The 2024 project installed sand slits at 1.5m centres across the pitch. Having demonstrated a measurable improvement in surface drainage and pitch performance, the club took the decision to intensify the secondary drainage network by infilling between the existing slits — effectively halving the spacing to deliver a comprehensive sand band installation at 750mm centres across the full pitch area.
Fineturf returned in April 2026, again deploying the Shelton 710 trencher to install the new slits at 50mm wide and 250mm deep, working precisely between the established bands to ensure uniformity throughout the profile.
The backfill specification remained consistent with the original programme. The lower 125mm of each channel was filled with 2–6mm gravel to maximise porosity and promote rapid downward water movement. A secondary pass then delivered 125mm of Redhill 45 sports sand into the upper portion of the channel, which was press wheeled before a final pass topped the sand flush to a level finish.
The result is a pitch now served by a fully interlocked sand slit drainage network at 750mm centres — a specification that delivers exceptional percolation rates and resilience against the most sustained periods of rainfall.
As with the first phase, the Fineturf team completed the works efficiently and within the required renovation window, handing the pitch back to the Tottenham grounds staff in excellent condition and fully prepared for their end of season renovations.
