Rebuilding Old Trafford, the Theatre of Dreams Full Pitch Reconstruction

In June 2026, Fineturf carried out a full natural turf pitch reconstruction at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United Football Club, marking the end of the working life of a surface that had served the club for fourteen seasons. Commissioned by Manchester United, the project represented a significant investment in the quality, performance and longevity of one of English football's most famous playing surfaces. Fineturf was proud to be entrusted with delivering this prestigious project, drawing on decades of experience in elite sports turf construction and renovation.

Old Trafford is globally recognised as one of the most iconic venues in world football, hosting Premier League and Champions League fixtures in front of tens of thousands of supporters on matchday. The previous surface had earned multiple industry awards for its playing quality over its fourteen seasons of service, and the condition of the pitch plays a vital role in both the standard of play and the reputation of the stadium, requiring exceptional levels of consistency, drainage and resilience.

With the surface having reached the end of its life, the 2026 reconstruction was designed to rebuild the pitch from the ground up ahead of the new season.

Work began with the removal of 150mm of the existing surface, carried out carefully to ensure the lower rootzone beneath was left clean and free from contamination. The hybrid material taken up in the process was sent to a local recycling centre, where it was trommel screened to separate the plastic fibre from the sand. The fibre was baled for repurposing, while the recovered sand was put to use in construction and landscaping applications elsewhere. Green waste arising from the strip-out was kept separate throughout, making it easier to recycle, and was transported back to Fineturf's own green waste recycling facility in Lincolnshire.

With the old surface cleared, attention turned to rebuilding the pitch from the ground up. The lower rootzone was cultivated to a depth of 50mm and laser graded, with the pitch given a camber running each way from the centre line. A 50mm layer of medium sports sand was then added to the lower rootzone and laser graded in turn. Before construction continued, the football goal sockets were replaced and net sockets installed, alongside new rugby league goal sockets, ensuring the pitch is set up for both codes.

As part of the reconstruction, the pitch was also widened by 700mm, with an additional loop of undersoil heating pipe, gravel carpet, lower rootzone and upper rootzone installed to extend the playing surface accordingly. The length of the pitch was also increased, with an additional 300mm added.

Construction of the upper rootzone followed, with 100mm of 90/10 rootzone added and laser graded. Thirty-one tonnes of Profile Porous Ceramic soil amendment, 11-11-5 Pearl Blockade, 18-22-5 fertiliser and Activate granules were then applied and worked into the upper rootzone to a depth of 85mm. Once thoroughly ameliorated, the surface was given a final grade and lute before being seeded with Johnsons Premier Pitch at a rate of 55g/m².

Four weeks after seeding, specialist contractor SIS Pitches stitched the Old Trafford surface, reinforcing it with six-ply yarn to a depth of 180mm in a 2cm x 2cm pattern, giving the pitch the stability required of a modern hybrid playing surface.

The artificial surrounds around the pitch were also renewed as part of the works. The existing surfaces were removed and a new wet pour rubber shockpad installed in their place. The bank surround was finished with a short pile carpet, while the flat surround received a 3G carpet filled with sand and green rubber crumb.

Throughout the works, the site was kept clean and tidy, and was left in that condition on completion.

This major reconstruction project highlights Fineturf's ability to deliver complex, high-profile sports turf works at the very highest level. Through close collaboration with Manchester United and specialist partner SIS Pitches, the 2026 reconstruction has created a pitch designed to meet world-class performance standards ahead of the new season. The result is a surface built to serve the next generation of moments at the Theatre of Dreams.
