Woodhall Spa Golf Club, The National Golf Centre Reconstruction of A4 Practice Green
August 2026
Fineturf was approached by Woodhall Spa Golf Club, The National Golf Centre, to carry out the complete reconstruction of an existing green within the club's practice area, designated A4. The existing green was totally removed, along with its existing drainage system, and a proportion of the original rootzone was retained for reuse.
The formation was shaped using the on-site subsoil, into which new drainage was cut, and excavation for a new irrigation pipe run was carried out around the perimeter of the green. New Toro Infinity sprinkler heads were installed and connected into the club's existing irrigation system. A 100mm gravel carpet was laid over the newly installed drainage within the formation, with the drainage outfall directed into a nearby running ditch.
300mm of the blended rootzone, combining the tested ratio of retained existing material and imported sand was then placed over the full area of the green on top of the gravel carpet. All shaping and contouring of the putting surface was carried out in close consultation with the client, ensuring the finished green met the desired playing characteristics for the practice area.
With the rootzone applied to the green surface, the existing topsoil across the surrounds and peripheral areas was replaced, bringing these areas up to the same standard as the newly constructed green ahead of seeding.
Ahead of seeding, the ground was prepared and a pre-seeder fertiliser was applied at a rate of 35g per square metre. The green itself was then seeded with creeping bent, while the surrounding areas were seeded with a rye/fescue mix.
While on site, Fineturf also installed ten Toro Infinity sprinklers to the adjacent practice tee, situated next to the newly constructed A4 practice green, extending irrigation coverage across this closely related area of the practice facility.
