The Queen's Club, London Steam Sterilisation and Reconstruction of Centre Court
August 2025
Fineturf are proud to have successfully completed the steam sterilisation and full reconstruction of the prestigious Centre Court at The Queen's Club, London. Working in collaboration with global specialists, Fineturf utilised a custom-built steam sterilisation unit designed specifically for sports turf renovation. Highly manoeuvrable, the unit can be positioned alongside the surface being treated, where steam is transferred via pipes and retained under heatproof covers.
The process is designed to achieve 85°C within the top 65mm of the soil profile for one full hour, with temperatures of at least 60°C reached in the deeper layers. This ensures the effective sterilisation of the profile, eliminating weeds, pests and pathogens without the use of chemicals.
Fineturf undertook a comprehensive reconstruction scheme, removing the existing surface and importing new Ongar Loam to re-construct the profile. The Ongar Loam was installed, compacted and keyed in in layers, laser grading the surface to achieve the perfect level.
As part of the reconstruction, a brand-new irrigation system was installed. This included the complete renewal of pipework, cabling, valves, irrigation boxes, and the installation of Rainbird sprinkler heads to provide precise, efficient water management across the court. High-performance Amenity Grass Seed was supplied and sown at a rate of 35g per m before a layer of high-quality tennis loam was spread evenly across the surface. To enhance germination and promote density, a second application of Amenity Grass Seed was spread, ensuring a strong and durable sward capable of withstanding the demands of world-class play.
The surface was then carefully luted and drag-matted to achieve a level finish, followed by the application of 6.5.18 fertiliser to encourage healthy early growth. All arisings were removed from site, leaving the Centre Court immaculately clean and ready for the new grass surface to establish.
This latest project reinforces Fineturf's reputation as a leader in sports turf innovation, delivering high-quality, sustainable solutions for some of the most iconic sporting venues in the UK.
