On Freedom's Wings - Lancaster Bomber Sculpture Earthworks, Ground Preparation & Turfing
May 2026
On Freedom's Wings is a Lincolnshire-based charity established to create a lasting tribute to the men and women of Bomber Command and the communities that supported them. The charity commissioned a life-size sculpture of an Avro Lancaster Bomber, one of the most iconic aircraft of the Second World War to stand as a permanent landmark in the county long associated with the bomber offensive.
Fineturf was approached by the charity to provide professional groundscare support in readiness for the sculpture's official unveiling. In recognition of the significance of the project and its charitable purpose, all works were carried out free of charge.
Earthworks
Fineturf's team carried out all earthworks required to prepare the site in advance of the sculpture installation. This included shaping and levelling the ground beneath and surrounding the Lancaster Bomber structure to create a stable, well-finished platform befitting the scale and importance of the installation.
Ground Preparation
Following the earthworks phase, the ground was cultivated and prepared to ensure a suitable seedbed and rooting environment for the turf. Levels were refined to shed surface water effectively and provide a clean, uniform finish around the base of the sculpture.
Turfing
The surrounds and ground beneath the sculpture were turfed using Tillers Arena Gold turf, supplied by Tillers Turf. The turfed areas frame the sculpture and provide an immediate, high-quality green finish appropriate for a landmark of this stature.
Background & Significance
Lincolnshire earned its enduring identity as 'Bomber County' during the Second World War, when more RAF bomber stations were located here than in any other county in England. The On Freedom's Wings sculpture stands as a permanent reminder of that heritage — honouring the crews who flew from these fields, the ground staff who kept them airworthy, and the communities who lived in the shadow of their operations.
For Fineturf and Tillers Turf, the opportunity to contribute to a project of this historical and emotional significance was one the team was proud to support. The works were delivered to the same professional standard applied to all Fineturf contracts, ensuring the setting does full justice to this remarkable installation.
