Lincoln Castle Grounds Maintenance — Deep Tine Aeration & Fertiliser Treatment

May 2026

Built by William the Conqueror in 1068 on the site of a Roman fortress, Lincoln Castle is one of England's best-preserved medieval castles and a designated scheduled monument owned by Lincolnshire County Council. It is one of only two castles in the UK with two mottes, and holds one of only four surviving original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, the only place in the world where it can be seen alongside the 1217 Charter of the Forest. Attractions include the 360-degree Medieval Wall Walk, the Victorian Prison, and a year-round events programme drawing visitors from across the UK and internationally.

Deep Tine Aeration

Fineturf carried out deep tine aeration across the Castle Grounds in May 2026, with tine penetration restricted to a maximum depth of 200 mm in full compliance with the site's heritage and conservation requirements. This depth delivers meaningful agronomic benefit, relieving compaction, improving drainage, promoting gaseous exchange, and stimulating deeper rooting whilst ensuring the integrity of sub-surface archaeology is fully preserved.

Fertiliser Application

Following aeration, Fineturf applied 28-3-15 multi Green controlled release fertiliser at 35 g/m² across all formal lawn areas. The elevated potassium content supports wear tolerance, cell wall strength, and disease resistance, well suited to a high-footfall amenity site. The controlled release formulation provides sustained nutrition without flush growth or nutrient leaching, and reduces the frequency of applications required across the season.
