Hockley Golf Club Tee Construction

February 2013

We have just completed the reconstruction of the 5th and 12th tees at Hockley Golf Club, Winchester. The course, established in 1914, is set in 250 acres of free draining chalk downland. The greenkeeping staff hope the members will be enjoying the new tees by early April.

In summary the scope of works included:

  • Strip off existing turf
  • Laser grade the existing material
  • Cut V-shaped drainage trenches into the formation using our Volvo Excavator
  • Install 80mm perforated drainage pipe and backfill trenches
  • Install a 100mm layer of 10mm drainage gravel
  • Install a 25mm blinding grit layer
  • Spread a 200mm layer of rootzone, an 80/20 mixture
  • Precision laser grade the rootzone
  • Carry out final ground preparation work
  • Install large roll tees turf, supplied by Tillers Turf

Glenn Kirby, head greenkeeper, has prepared two excellent articles discussing the construction techniques used. These can be read at his greenkeeping blog:
