Conningbrook Bowls Club County Standard Bowling Green Construction

March 2026
Project Overview

Fineturf was commissioned by Conningbrook Bowls Club in January 2026 to design and construct a new county standard bowling green. The project brief called for a surface capable of meeting the performance requirements for county level competition, built on a fully engineered sub-base and drainage system, and finished with premium quality USGA specification turf.

Fineturf's involvement covered the complete construction programme, from drainage engineering and full irrigation system installation through to rootzone preparation, turfing, and final handover, delivering a finished green ready to enter a controlled grow-in phase.

Drainage Infrastructure

Perimeter drainage was installed using county concrete channels, providing a robust and durable edge drainage solution suited to the demands of a competition-standard green. Concrete channels at the perimeter ensure that surface water is efficiently intercepted and directed away from the playing surface, protecting the integrity of the rootzone and preventing waterlogging at the green's edges, a critical performance factor at county level.

Beneath the rootzone, a full gravel carpet was installed across the green, providing the free-draining sub-base layer required to support rapid surface water movement and comply with USGA construction principles. The gravel carpet ensures consistent drainage rates across the entire playing surface, preventing differential settlement and surface irregularity over time.

Irrigation System

A full irrigation system was installed as part of the construction programme, providing Conningbrook Bowls Club with the means to maintain precise moisture management across the green throughout the season. Reliable, controllable irrigation is an essential component of any county standard bowling green, allowing the groundscare team to sustain optimal playing conditions during dry periods and to support the turf during the critical establishment phase.

The system was designed and installed to provide even coverage across the full playing surface, working in conjunction with the drainage infrastructure to give the club complete control over the moisture profile of the rootzone.

Rootzone Construction

The rootzone was constructed to USGA specification, providing the precisely engineered growing medium required for consistent ball roll, surface trueness, and long-term agronomic performance. A USGA rootzone profile is the benchmark for elite bowling green construction, offering optimal drainage, aeration, and root development characteristics.

The rootzone layer was installed to the specified depth and carefully prepared to achieve the levels of accuracy and surface uniformity demanded at county standard.

Turfing

The completed rootzone was finished with Tillers Greens fescue/bent turf on USGA rootzone, supplied by Tillers Turf Co, one of the UK's leading producers of specialist fine turf and a sister company of Fineturf. The fescue/bent sward mix is the traditional and preferred choice for county standard bowling greens, delivering the fine leaf texture, tight shoot density, and consistent pace of play that the game demands at competition level.

Grown on a USGA-compliant rootzone, the turf provides full profile continuity with the prepared construction below, ensuring rapid and uniform establishment, strong rooting, and long-term surface stability. The result is a premium playing surface with the agronomic credentials to perform consistently throughout the bowling season.

Outcome

The completed construction provides Conningbrook Bowls Club with a county standard playing surface built to the highest specification available in UK bowling green construction. The combination of concrete channel perimeter drainage, full gravel carpet sub-base, USGA rootzone, and Tillers fine turf represents a complete, integrated system designed to deliver consistent performance, excellent drainage, and durability throughout the season.

Fineturf is proud to have delivered this project for Conningbrook Bowls Club, supporting the club's ambitions at county level with a surface capable of meeting the exacting standards demanded by the modern game.
