We Won’t Let the Grass Grow Under Our Feet

What have Manchester United, Lords and Trent Bridge Cricket ground have in common? They all rely on a very special plant to play on – grass. But this is no common turf; this is the Rolls Royce of its kind. Amazingly, it’s a local firm that supplied the very grass that some of our top sports professionals play on. All their turf is grown from a something called Limigrain Advanta Seed Mixtures. This comes from one of the largest seed houses in the world. But it’s the local soil and minerals that give it the edge and ensure that Fineturf’s grass does the business. It’s grown for a period of at least eighteen months and is treated with what’s known in the trade as a ‘Headstart’. This seaweed extract promotes cell division, stimulates the grass’s metabolic process and leads to faster germination.

When it’s ready for use a special Turf harvester cuts precise sections from the local fields. The blade slices fifteen millimetres deep and removes sections measuring about two feet by four-and-a-half feet long, in other words, a turf roll with an area covering one square metre. It’s then ready to be delivered where it’s needed. And that could just be your lawn, or playground or local football pitch or premier sports ground. Not to mention that certain sporting event in London in four years time.
